Carbon offsetting standards backed by UK Government

18th January 2007 (Source: Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs )

People offsetting their carbon emissions will soon be able to do so with greater clarity and certainty with the development of a voluntary standard for offsetting, released for public consultation today.

Environment Secretary David Miliband said the standard and associated code of practice would raise the bar for the offsetting industry.

"Offsetting isn't the answer to climate change. The first step should always be to see how we can avoid and reduce emissions - through thinking about how we use energy in our homes and businesses, and the way we travel.

"However, some emissions can't or won't be avoided. That's where offsetting has a role to play. It's a way of compensating for the emissions produced with an equivalent carbon saving."

204 Singur residents take test for advanced training

MUMBAI, KOLKATA, February 26, 2007: A batch of 204 Singur residents today took a test, conducted by Tata Motors and the West Bengal Industrial Development Corporation (WBIDC). Those who qualify and meet necessary criteria will be provided with advanced training to enhance their employability.

This is the third round of test, since the initiative to select Singur residents and enhance their employability through courses tailored as per their education qualifications began in December 2006. All the candidates had earlier registered with the WBIDC.

The batch of 204 candidates included those Singur inmates who had earlier been placed by the WBIDC at the Ramakrishna Mission Shilpa Mandir (Belur) for exposure to different industrial skills, and those candidates who did not qualify in the tests held for Industrial Training Institute (ITI)-trained candidates on December 25, 2006, and February 10, 2007.
